Invasive Aedes Are Moving. Is Your District Ready?
For mosquito abatement districts (MADs) and public health officials (PHOs), the map is changing. Invasive Aedes species are suddenly surfacing in regions where they were not previously established. They have even been detected in areas where it was not believed they could survive and it remains to be seen where that geographic limit will be reached.
“The textbooks say that these Aedes aegypti should not be in Las Vegas and in Grand Junction, and certainly not in Boise, Idaho,” notes Loren Cunnington, West Central Regional sales manager at Central Life Sciences. “But I guess mosquitoes don’t read textbooks.”
This geographic shift is forcing some districts into a total operational pivot. Programs long optimized to target Culex mosquitoes for West Nile virus control are finding that their standard playbooks don’t apply to these new arrivals. When a different species establishes a foothold, Cunnington warns, “you’re really having to treat them in a different way than your whole program is set up for.”
Mounting an effective defense starts with understanding the encroachment. According to Mike Riles, Southeast Regional sales manager and vice president of the BEACONS Foundation (Biodiversity Enhancement and Control of Non-native Species), it is critical to distinguish between non-native and truly invasive threats. While non-native species simply exist outside their historical range without necessarily causing damage, invasives actively threaten local economies, environments, and human health.
For most mosquito control professionals, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus remain the dominant resource drains. And a major reason Aedes aegypti is so difficult to manage is its preference for human proximity.
These “aggressive daytime biters,” as Cunnington describes them, thrive in urban and suburban environments. They utilize cryptic breeding sites—buckets, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and virtually any small container that holds water. These sources are notoriously difficult to find, track, and eliminate. And because they actively seek out people for blood meals, districts are forced to shift their focus away from their traditional larval habitats directly into residential backyards, a change that stresses budgets and makes the allocation of resources even more difficult.
Samer Elkashef, West Regional sales manager, notes that this proximity completely “changes the game.”
“You’re in people’s neighborhoods, you’re in people’s homes,” Elkashef explains.
This shift introduces a completely new operational hurdle: public cooperation. Technicians are now forced to navigate locked gates, absent homeowners, and access hesitation just to do their jobs.
“Mosquitoes are easy,” Elkashef notes. “People are hard.”
Overcoming that public barrier is becoming increasingly urgent. In Southern California, local dengue transmission has now occurred for three consecutive years. For West Coast programs accustomed to focusing on West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis, this represents an entirely different type of risk.
“For someone who hasn’t been out of the country, hasn’t been out of their neighborhood, testing positive for dengue, that’s a bit scary,” Elkashef says.
That elevated risk makes early detection critical. A few isolated occurrences shouldn’t spark panic, but they should serve as a catalyst for districts to evaluate their staffing, training, and control plans before the invasive Aedes populations fully establish themselves. Surveillance programs need to become highly sensitive, with hyper-local focus, utilizing the right trapping and surveillance tools and ensuring staff can accurately identify these new species that can resemble native populations.
And effective surveillance requires more than just hardware.
“Surveillance isn’t just setting a trap out,” Riles emphasizes. “It’s also communication lines that you build with your stakeholders and partners.” Neighboring districts, health departments, ports of entry, and tourism boards are essential allies in identifying new introductions before they spread.
Public education is also a key component in the fight against these invasive species. By keeping residents informed about what these mosquitoes look like, how they behave (day biters), and the threats they pose (dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, etc.), districts can gain the public support and cooperation they need to better control these mosquitoes. However, while asking residents to dump standing water and report suspected invasive species infestations helps, it is rarely enough to mitigate the problem on its own.
When treatment is required, strategies must match the biology of the mosquito. Districts have developed strategies that combine targeted larvicide applications using power mist blowers, ULV adulticide spraying, barrier adulticide applications, and source reduction, with comprehensive public outreach to gain control in these backyard habitats.
As invasive mosquitoes continue to expand their territory, a district’s readiness will define its success.
“Keep your eyes peeled,” Riles advises. “You never know when a non-native or an invasive will pop up into your surveillance nets. Don’t be complacent.”
